MISSION & VISION

The National Trust for Historic Preservation began its national Main Street movement in 1979, with Madison as one of three pilot communities. Making Madison, the original and oldest Nationally Accredited Main Street district in the Nation. Madison is now one of more than 1,200 Main Street communities across the country with the common goal of preserving America’s historic downtown as economically vital centers of the community.

Madison Main Street (MMSP) is a team of residents, business owners, property owners, and civic leaders working together to ensure that downtown Madison is a vibrant place to live, work, shop, dine, visit, and play. Madison Main Street is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization designated by Indiana Main Street and accredited by the National Main Street Center. As a 501 (c)3, MMSP relies on a strong base of volunteers to get work done!

Madison’s historic downtown district is economically vibrant, with shops, restaurants, and nightlife serving local residents as well as a large number of tourists and visitors. With more than 15 events organized annually, we ensure the investment in our non-profit mission is measurable and promotes all things local. Our volunteers get things done! MMSP is made up of a volunteer-based board and committee leadership.

COMMITTEES

Five committees, led by committee chairs, strategically plan and organize Madison Main Street events and initiatives. Promotions, Economic Vitality, Design, Organization, and Farmers Market. Each committee meets monthly to steer the organization along the path to appeal to visitors, customers, and residents' requests! Volunteers join committee meetings and event planning sessions to get things done!

THE DAY TO DAY

As a Nationally-Accredited Main Street, Madison Main Street focuses on the historic commercial shopping district and works with community partners, donors, sponsors, and supporters to connect with those outside of the district. Below is a quick look at our district which encompasses 200+ businesses. Staffing plays a key part in managing the network and the resources for the downtown business district.

MMSP staff works daily to locally lead a national movement committed to strengthening communities with preservation-based economic development. For staff, this can mean: managing the Madison Farmers Market, creating social media content, business-to-business networking, business recruitment, business retention, workshop planning, updating the MMSP website, coordinating with volunteers, prepping for events, advocating for our small businesses with the City of Madison and the State of Indiana, and so much more!
