Out of work and living out of town, Mark Jackson distributed flyers door to door in Vincennes, IN, to generate carpet cleaning leads. With rented equipment and a long day of hard work, he earned $225, net of expenses. “I was hooked! The minimum wage in 1981 was about $3 per hour,” Jackson said. He called his new business Sure Clean. “I wanted people to know what I was going to do,” he explained.

After building up the Sure Clean business in Vincennes, he sold it and moved to Florida to reinvent Sure Clean there. “This business is not for everyone. It is hard physical work. It is tiring. I do whatever it takes to get the job done right,” Jackson stated. On one job, he spent 21 hours stripping layers of dirt and wax to clean the floor of a store. He cleaned a 4-star restaurant and also cleaned for some well-known individuals. Again, he sold the business. He returned to Vincennes to work. Finally in 2006, Jackson returned to Madison, IN, his hometown, to open a new Sure Clean business. He has now been serving Madison area customers for 18 years.

“People feel better when their home is clean. They also feel better about themselves,” said Jackson. A clean home or business is always more welcoming. “I like to help people. Mostly I do it all myself, although I sometimes have a helper. I find value in doing it well,” he continued.

Sure Clean provides a broad menu of services, including DIY options. Those services are:

24/7 emergency water and flood extraction
Cleaning of carpets, area rugs, upholstery, hard surfaces, air ducts and wood floors
Odor Removal using Miracle Vapor Gassing System to disintegrate odor particles

The Sure Clean schedule is usually booked 2-3 weeks out, so it is important to allow enough time to get on the schedule when there is a critical deadline for cleaning prior to an event. However, sometimes schedule changes occur and it is possible to get on the schedule on short notice. The best way to contact Jackson is to send a text to him at 812-273-1841. Calls during the day will usually go to voicemail when Jackson is working on a job. He generally returns calls at the end of the day or early evening.

Jackson has fond memories of growing up in Madison. He spent hours skipping rocks and fishing on the Ohio River. He also remembers when things were not so good as they are now. “It takes vision to make changes. I love the new bridge. I always appreciated Madison,” Jackson said. He notes that new residents and visitors also appreciate the beauty of Madison.

As a downtown business owner, Jackson puts up seasonal décor in front of his workshop located at 841 W. Main St. He always takes time to help individuals who stop to ask for directions.

One of his most memorable cleaning experiences occurred in Florida when he was only 27 years old. After cleaning the carpet for an older woman, she told him, “You’ve done a very good job. I’m legally blind due to glaucoma and I can tell the difference.” That genuine praise to a young entrepreneur was very encouraging. Jackson said, “I’m always looking to provide the WOW factor.”
